OverviewThe present history of the Irish Franciscan College in Prague is based on numerous but heretofore largely neglected archival sources which allow for a minute reconstruction of important periods of the history of the Franciscan house and of day-to-day life in the College. It is particularly the circumstances of the foundation of the College and its dissolution that emerge most vividly, together with extraordinary events (visitations) during which the Prague Franciscan community became the focal point of local church dignitaries. The auspicious conditions for the foundation of the college and the support of Emperor Ferdinand II and the Prague Archbishop Ernst Adalbert, Cardinal von Harrach were paradoxically determined by the defeat of the rising of the Czech Estates that was followed by a re-Catholicisation of the mostly Protestant population. The dissolution of the College and the departure of the Irish friars came as a consequence of the policies of Emperor Joseph II in relation to churches. The significance of the Irish Franciscans in the intellectual life of Baroque Prague stemmed from their work as teachers in the archiepiscopal seminary up till 1692. The book focuses also on the library of the College and on the preserved artefacts from its church, and is appended with a list of all Irish Franciscans who had passed through the College and are recorded in the available sources.
