The Invisible Car Race

Overview

Katrina Meservier, an intellectually capable MIT engineer who just helped the school team build the most sophisticated automobile on the planet was also chosen to ride in the passenger seat with a real race car driver. In a race to test new automotive technologies, they were to push this new automobile to its limits with twenty-seven other teams from around the country. The race was from Boston to California. Richard Bertrand, a handsome, brash, egotistical, strong-willed driver hired to be the driver, came in for team MIT guns blazing. He intended to be across the country in three days instead of five and cross the finish line first because his self -imagined ego of being the best of the best would get him there first. In fact, he didn't read up on the race rules, or how to use the car. When he showed up the car had a laser cannon on the roof. This did not worry him in the least. If he didn't know how to use a piece of technology or the cannon, he imagined his passenger would take of everything for him while he intimated the other teams with his bravado and talent. In Richard's self-imaged idea of being better than anyone, his nerdy co-pilot turned out to be the exact opposite. Kind, thoughtful, and brilliant, Katrina was epitome of being a brilliant engineer and a woman. Together they were fire and ice. Within the first day, she discovered his bravado to be nothing more than a strong portrayal of masculine heterosexuality who loved women and left them without a second thought. When she told him she believed him to be gay, fireworks went off. What neither of them knew was that the race was financed by billionaires. This race was purely for their entertainment. They set up the rules where the excitement wasn't in winning but how badly teams would fail. In that failing, which would be broadcast across the dark web for money, people would die for their entertainment. For Katrina and Richard, they learned in the first hour their seemingly petty differences meant nothing compared to staying alive. Being brilliant or gay didn't amount to very much compared to working together to overcome five days of deadly obstacles. When the bullets started coming their way, their special skills brought out a new appreciation for the other. With the mob, gangs, and hit men after them, their talents meshed like gears in an engine making them unstoppable.
