Overview

The Invention of Crowdfunding is half tech-history and half memoir. Jeffrey Pelletier is widely considered the inventor of modern internet-based crowdfunding for his creation of the Marillion Tour Fund in 1997. This book chronicles the events that led to UK progressive rock band Marillion's fans banding together to bring their favorite group across the Atlantic to tour North America in an unprecedented and historic act that changed the way many bands function in the music industry to this day. This event later led to the first album pre-order campaign, conceived by Marillion's keyboardist Mark Kelly for their 2001 album Anoraknophobia. In addition, this book has many nostalgic stories from the formative years of the author's life interspersed within the chapters of the main crowdfunding narrative. These personal snapshots help the reader get to know the author as the arc of the story reaches a life-affirming conclusion. The book includes brief contributions by members of the band (Steve Hogarth, Pete Trewavas and Mark Kelly) and others, as well as additional supplemental material. This book comes in a blue cloth hardcover edition with a dust jacket featuring the gorgeous Marbles blue skyline Neverland artwork. Printed in premium full color on 70 lb. quality paper with over 300 color images of Marillion artwork, personal photos, concert paraphernalia, etc...

"""Right place, right time, right thing to say. I know innovation is 99% perspiration but it took an initial spark of inspiration, a chance to stumble upon that key glinting in the mud, a moment of reflection to conjure the thought: ""What if?"" Just as Archimedes had his Eureka! moment and Newton was hit by an apple, in this story of a thousand stories, for crowdfunding, that guy was Jeff Pelletier."" Jon Collins - author of the official Marillion biography, ""Separated Out"" and the Rush biography, ""Chemistry"" - officially titled ""CHemist(r)y"". ""This book is a thorough account of how Jeff Pelletier invented crowdfunding, but also so much more than that. To understand why Pelletier came up with the idea - which has transformed not just the music industry, but has also benefitted entrepreneurial and philanthropic endeavors - you first need to understand the passion that animated him. ""The Invention of Crowdfunding"" is really a memoir. The American author recounts the formative episodes in his life that explain why he felt a deep and emotional connection with the music of the British rock band Marillion. Pelletier is a natural-born storyteller. These hilarious and heartbreaking snapshots from his life have a universal resonance. They also form a cumulative arc, starting from a misplaced childhood and ending with the realization that happiness is the road. It's fitting that the man who invented crowdfunding has also written such a crowd-pleasing book."" Stephen Humphries - music journalist and author of ""The Art of Rush: Serving a Life Sentence"", the illustrated history of Rush. ""It's not often that someone can claim they helped shape the future. But Jeff is one of those rare people. This all happened way back in the infancy of the internet. And Jeff (with the enthusiasm of youth, the faith in his fellow man and the generosity of an out-and-out fan) decided he want-ed to help us, ""Marillion,"" his favourite band, tour America. As I'm writing this, I can see how ridiculous it may sound. However, in this quite remarkable story, he turned his wishes into a dream come true. How do I know this? I was there."" Pete Trewavas - Marillion bassist"
