Overview

First published in 1940, this book was the first to focus public attention on the mass and indiscriminate internment of German-speaking refugees and political exiles in Britain, which followed news of the Nazi occupation of Holland early in 1940. This book is a combination of reportage, oral history and analysis, looking at aspects of home policy in the period, illustrated by the freshly told experiences of the refugees themselves. The book covers the months of the mass deportations of refugees to Cananda and Australia, incuding the sinking by German torpedo of the Araandora Star with the loss of some 500 lives.
