Table of ContentsReviewsThis book was reviewed by Alison Barker in Journal 231, autumn 2009, and has since been released with an accompanying instructional DVD. The DVD does not attempt to cover everything in the book but nicely compliments it. A chapter menu allows the viewer to select from the topics How to Ply, Cabled Yarns, Novelty Yarns, Diameter Control and Finishing. Author and presenter Judith has a relaxed manner and thought has obviously been given to filming angle, backdrop and colours to give the best possible view of the technique under discussion. I found Judith's demonstration of plying multiple singles fascinating. In all sections she explains the reasons for what she does and its effect on the finished yarn and gives plenty of suggestions to follow up on. The presentation of 'Diameter Control' using a wheel's Scotch tension makes thought provoking viewing and reveals how underused this feature normally is. Used effectively a considerable variety of consistent diameter yarns can be spun without the spinner changing their default spinning rhythm! Working this technique over a range of differently sized whorls, which Judith demonstrates, allows the creation of a huge array of even yarns in many sizes. To become a better spinner the recommendation is to practise this technique regularly just as a musician plays scales. Watching this DVD was like having my own personal workshop, and better still I can work through it at my own pace and 'attend' over and over to hone my skills. This book with DVD will definitely be joining my spinner's library.
