Overview

This is the first book to trace the origins of conservatism to the French Revolution and to offer detailed analysis from the perspective of a Catholic critique. This study examines the thought, writings, and actions of Pius VI in the light of the thoughts of John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Edmund Burke, Mary Wollstonecraft, and Immanuel Kant with respect to the French Revolution. Each political thinker and actor discussed represents commentary on the Revolution in nations outside of France. They also represent various political stances that take shape in their nations because of the French Revolution. This work shows the stance that Pius VI took attempting to protect the Catholic Church from the direct threats of Revolutionaries as well as keep the Church independent of political alliances.

Reviews

Langan's rejection of conservatism bespeaks a profound transformation in the Catholic mind. (Prof. E. Michael Jones Temple University) A careful reading of the reasoning and of the materials which sustain it brings one to recognize in this piece of scholarship an act of historiological justice. (Prof. Carlos A. Casanova International Academy of Philosophy)
