Overview

This book gathers problems based on over twenty years of the Indiana College Mathematics Competition, a regional problem-solving contest for teams of undergraduates. Its problems and solutions are accessible to students in a standard college curriculum, not necessarily with Olympiad-level training. Problem sets form the core of Part I, covering myriad aspects of algebra, calculus, number theory, probability, and geometry. Chapters are organized by year, and an index allows easy navigation through specific topics. In Part II, the reader finds detailed solutions to the exercises. With revised solutions designed for a didactical approach, this book can be especially useful as a resource for problem-solving courses in college mathematics or as practice problems for graduate entrance exams. This volume is a sequel to Rick Gillman's ""A Friendly Competition,"" which documented the first 35 years of the competition.

Author Information

Adam Coffman is a Professor of Mathematics at Purdue University Fort Wayne. He earned his Ph.D. in 1997 from the University of Chicago. His research interests are in geometry and analysis.  He was the 2018 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Indiana Section of the Mathematical Association of America. Justin Gash is a Professor of Mathematics at Franklin College. He earned his Ph.D. from Indiana University. His research interests are in computational algebra and apologetics.  He was the 2021 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Indiana Section of the Mathematical Association of America. Rick Gillman is a Senior Research Professor of Mathematics and Statistics at Valparaiso University. He obtained a Doctor of Arts degree from Idaho State University in 1986. Dr. Gillman specializes in game theory, with a particular interest in its use as a modeling method.  He has been active in the Indiana Section of the MAA throughout his career. John Rickert is a Professor of Mathematics at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.  He earned his Ph.D. in 1990 from the University of Michigan.  His research interests lie in number theory. He was a 1999 recipient of the George Pólya Award for expository excellence from the Mathematical Association of America.
