OverviewIncontinence affects both males and females, young and old, yet is rarely talked about . It affects many elderly as the prevalence of incontinence in the over 65's is nearly 30% and this only includes those who have gone to their GP for help in tackling this problem, not those who are suffering silently unable to go out just in case the facilities are closed again. The general treatment for incontinence is a set of exercises which most people do not find helpful. Medication will be offered but the most common - and cheapest - medication is a a risk factor for cognitive decline. Nutritional deficiencies are often the cause of bladder problems which cause nocturia, frequency and urgency, pain and discomfort. Nutritional deficiencies can increase bladder spasms, the risk of infection and discomfort but just as they are a risk, this risk can be reversed by increasing certain nutrients either in the diet or by supplementing. All this comes without the negative side effects of commonly prescribed medication. Following the principles in this book can help alleviate bladder problems, decrease the risk for chronic urinary tract infection and enable individuals to be able to live life fully once more. Two further chapters on 1) how brain injury, however subtle, can result on in continence problems and 2) how a major protein can in some case eliminate continence problems in older women if there are no other underlying issues, are included.
