Overview

The grass family (Poaceae) is one of the most important plant families in global agriculture, as it includes staple grains that feed the world's population and support food security, such as wheat (Triticum spp.), corn (Zea mays), and barley (Hordeum vulgare), which represent the largest part of global food demand. Global cereal production, including wheat, is estimated to reach record levels in the 2025/2026 season, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO, 2025a) forecast. In the Arab world, wheat is a key crop in food security policies, as countries seek to boost local production and reduce dependence on imports through agricultural support programs and expanding cultivated areas, especially in the face of population pressures and climate and water challenges (FAO, 2025b).
