Wmk. covering entire sheet of stamps, and consist Prior to the adoption of the first-issued type, an essay of a very elegant design was engraved on steel, and would have been employed, but some delay occurred in cutting the die, and by order of the Governor-General the design ultimately issued was hurriedly and roughly produced, in order to permit of the immediate employment of stamps. Such is the account given by Colonel Mainwaring in The Stamp-Cnlleclor's Magazine for January, 1874.
