Overview

Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-The Hunting of the Snark, An Agony, in Eight Fits by Lewis Carroll. The purpose of realizing this historical context is to approach the understanding of a historical epoch from the elements provided by the text. Hence the importance of placing the document in context. It is necessary to unravel what its author or authors have said, how it has been said, when, why and where, always relating it to its historical moment. An Agony in Eight Fits, meaningless poem by Lewis Carroll, first published in 1876. The fantastic eight-song poem depicts the sea voyage of a buttons, boots (boots black), hood maker, lawyer, racer, marker billiards, banker, beaver, baker and butcher and his search for the elusive and indefinite growl. A dedicatory poem that Carroll attached to the play contained an acrostic in the name of his then favorite friend, Gertrude Chataway, whose name is also found in the first words of each stanza of the poem: Girt, Rude, Chat, Away. While scholars have attributed hidden meanings to work from political subversion to existential agony, Carroll argued that his intention was simply nonsense.
