OverviewThe Horse Who Could Do Anything is about a horse named Consoler who has a hard time finding his own success and doubts himself when he does not succeed at what he is born to do. When he finally meets a young girl who thinks the world of him his life changes for the better because she told him that she believes he is the capable of doing anything. Children will find the theme relatable; that being good at something is not always easy and sometimes you just need to have someone tell you that you are special and that they believe in you. There is also a secondary theme that portrays gratitude and love over time and distance, and that true friendship last forever. The Horse Who Could Do Anything is a progressive reading series, that uses a familiar subject and story line to encourage repetitive reading on three separate levels: young, intermediate and chapter book. The author's love of horses drew her to stories like Black Beauty and the Black Stallion at a young age. Looking back, she felt like they were above her reading abilities to comprehend for her at age 5 and a slightly easier level would have made reading them unassisted a great confidence booster. With her own children at various reading level the author has designed the series to keep the same subject matter, as it has the ability to appeal to readers of different levels and allows for younger children to enjoy a favorite story that evolves into a stronger plot line and strengthens their reading skills. The daughter of a Naval pilot, she was born in Albany, GA and grew up in San Diego, CA. She was fascinated with horse racing and show jumping and dreamed of becoming a jockey and retraining a racehorse to ride in the Olympics. At seven years old she had her first riding lesson with Gerry Donnelly; who helped the family search for a suitable horse after five years of lessons. After taking care of a horse named Magnum for several months and having him fail a pre-purchase exam Laura was heartbroken. The next horse Gerry introduced her to was Consoler, who turned out to be everything she imagined and he healed her heart. They won several year-end awards showing at Sweetwater, Ramona, Show Park, Camp Pendleton and Miramar. While away at college Laura went to qualify for intercollegiate regional's under the late A.J. Coyle and David and Laurie Meacham. She stayed on the east coast and taught in Greenwich, CT, New York City and New Jersey. In 2000 her dreams came true when she rode in her first sanctioned horse race at Monmouth Park. Ms. Klein resides on a farm in Pennsylvania with her family and pets. She credits her parents for encouraging her to dream big and their memories of Soler as an inspiration to write this book. Her daughter's interest in writing and art was the inspiration to illustrate the book herself. Her illustrations are influenced by her former high school art teacher Mr. Joe Nyiri's approach to drawing what you see. The drawings were done with colored pencils and pastels.
