OverviewExcerpt from The Home Counties Magazine, Vol. 2: Devoted to the Topography of London, Middlesex, Essex, Herts, Bucks, Berks, Surrey and Kent The first and, so far as is recorded, the only occasion on which Romney met Cowper was at Eartham, his friend Hayley's country residence near Chichester, in the summer of 1792. He then made the crayon drawing of the poet, which elicited from the latter the graceful sonnet printed in the Life of Romney by his son, and was afterwards engraved by Blake for Hayley's Life of Cowper. If the painting be correctly attributed to Romney, as seems fairly certain, it must be assigned to the same date.
