The Holy Spirit, Women, and Mission

Overview

This book examines how Pentecostal and charismatic women develop as leaders, how they actively engage in ministry and mission, and how the Holy Spirit enables them to carry out God's work more effectively. Although the leadership and missional abilities of women are not adequately accepted and acknowledged in the churches, many Pentecostal/charismatic communities have recognized and embraced them. And as the scope of women's ministry has broadened from local contexts to a global one, it has greatly influenced both the church and its missions. Despite still struggling for equal recognition of their service in the gospel, nothing and no one is able to stop the essential work of Spirit-led women in Christian leadership and ministry.

Reviews

""Dr. Julie Ma offers a vital exploration of the evolving role of women in ministry, with a particular focus on Asia. Blending personal insight with compelling stories of influential women--focusing primarily on those from the last century--Ma brings to life their work and experiences that have helped shape the church. Her integration of biblical perspectives often highlights the tension between cultural barriers and divine calling, while illustrating how these women, empowered by faith, found the strength and courage to persevere. Ma underscores their lasting contributions and urges the church to recognize, engage, and support such ministries as they confront the complex challenges of the twenty-first century."" --Kathaleen Reid-Martinez, Provost, Oral Roberts University ""I welcome this authentic account of the experience of Christian women outside the West by one who is representative of such women and has wide global experience. Dr. Julie Ma has brought together a wealth of data and stories of such women's ministry on several continents while also recounting their challenges in fulfilling their callings to evangelize, lead, and teach. The evidence in this book and the author's arguments will encourage many other women to live into the freedom of the Spirit, which is indiscriminately poured out on both women and men."" --Kirsteen Kim, Paul E. Pierson Professor of World Christianity, Fuller Theological Seminary ""This insightful exploration of women's roles in leadership and ministry brilliantly highlights their invaluable contributions to the church and society. The case studies presented shed light on the challenges faced by women in the Global South and emphasize God's call for all people, regardless of gender. With rich examples of perseverance and faith, this work is a vital resource for understanding and promoting equality and empowerment in spiritual leadership. Highly recommended!"" --Opoku Onyinah, Former Chairman, The Church of Pentecost ""Although there are now an increasing number of studies focusing on women in mission, few have been written from a Pentecostal perspective and with an emphasis on the Asian context. Dr. Julie Ma's book, which helps to fill a gap, should therefore be warmly welcomed. Of particular interest is Ma's argument that to be able to take on leadership roles, again and again, women have had to overcome strong gender biases within their respective social-ecclesial cultures. This breaking of glass ceilings can often be traceable to the Spirit's empowerment in Pentecostal theology. I heartily commend this significant contribution to our understanding of the role of Pentecostal women in mission."" --Hwa Yung, Bishop Emeritus, The Methodist Church in Malaysia
