The History of the East Riding Yeomanry VOLUME 1: Wenlock's Horsemen: The East Riding Yeomanry in the First World War 1902-1930

Overview

The East Riding of Yorkshire Yeomanry was formed in the aftermath of the Boer War by Beilby Lawley, Lord Wenlock, and henceforth known unofficially as 'Wenlock's Horse'. This is the story, told largely through eyewitness accounts never before published, of a British Territorial Army cavalry regiment thrust into the maelstrom of the First World War. Despatched to Egypt, the Regiment saw active service against the Turks in the Palestine campaign of 1917, participating in some of the final cavalry charges of the British Army, and leading to the fall of Jerusalem. In response to the German Spring Offensives of 1918, the Regiment was rushed to France as machine gunners, where they experienced first-hand the realities of trench warfare on the Western Front as they took part in the final Allied offensives of the war. The Great War signalled the beginning of the end of horses in modern warfare, and the East Riding Yeomanry was amongst the first units in the British Army to mechanise, becoming an armoured car company of the Royal Tank Corps in the 1920s. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.
