The History of Thurlaston, Leicestershire: Including Normanton Turville, New Hall Park, and Bassett House, Collected from Various Sources, and Written in Narrative Form (Classic Reprint)

Overview

Excerpt from The History of Thurlaston, Leicestershire: Including Normanton Turville, New Hall Park, and Bassett House, Collected From Various Sources, and Written in Narrative Form Having arrived at this stage, it may be fit to apologize in some measure for having dwelt so much on this early history of our country, while Thurlaston remains a blank; if, however, we are anxious to Show the growth of our national as well as our parochial life, some excuse may be made for giving this summary, which after all is only a brief one, leading up to the time when, the three Saxon kingdoms still existing as distinct states, we first get a glimpse of the history of this parish. From that time up to the present, for more than a thousand years, there is abundance of matter to make the history of Thurlaston interesting; and it may well be a matter of surprise that with a very few exceptions, to be afterwards mentioned, it has so scantily engaged the attention given to other parishes by Archaeologists and those who value places more for their ancient than their modern importance. It may reasonably be hoped that in future more interest may be taken in the parish and its past history, and every effort made to separate truth from mere conjecture.
