OverviewPopular Christianity assumes that the Gospels tell us the history of what Jesus did and said. Modern critical study of the New Testament has shown, however, that they are made up of many sections, written by early Christians and drawn from the sermons, liturgy, and other writings of various congregations ('Stories of Jesus', 2020). Some scholars have concluded that we cannot know anything about the real Jesus. Nonetheless, it is possible to trace a considerable amount of historical evidence and to discover some events in the life of Jesus, including the actions which led to his death. Christianity is based to a considerable degree on later assumptions and interpretations which are read back into the story. If we read between the lines of the New Testament, especially the Gospels, we may discern an alternative history which takes account of all the early evidence and answers many questions which are left open by traditional interpretation (Rewriting History, 2026). It forms the background to this study. The book falls into two parts. The first examines events from Jesus' birth to the end of his Galilean ministry. The second lists places through which he travelled on the way to his death and the events surrounding his death and burial.
