Reviews

A handsome edition of the stirring narrative poem in which the landlord's black-eyed daughter saves her returning lover by warning him ( with her death ) of an ambush. Waldman's stylized paintings - which combine occasional detailed passages that focus attention with exquisitely tinted silhouettes - enhance the drama without intruding on the reader's response to this quintessentially romantic drama. An interesting contrast to Mikolaycak's quieter yet more intense 1983 rendition, with its more skillful draftsmanship and design and greater psychological depth. (Kirkus Reviews)
