Overview

A teen's guide to surviving-and thriving-with high sensitivity in an insensitive world. Does it ever feel like your emotions are more intense than others? Are you bothered by loud noises, bright lights, or strong smells, or feel overwhelmed by crowds or the prospect of interacting with strangers? Do you sometimes feel paralyzed by your fear of judgment, rejection, or criticism? Can you intuitively read how other people are feeling As a highly sensitive (HSP) person in your teens, you are inherently wired to be extremely aware of your environment-both mentally and physically. This can be a precious gift-but it's also easy to feel overwhelmed when stimulation is coming from every direction. So, how can you quiet the noise, understand your unique brain, and use your gifts to enhance your life and reach your goals? The Highly Sensitive Teen is a fun and engaging guide to staying grounded when life gets too loud. You'll learn to better understand and cope with overstimulation and emotional overwhelm. You'll find tons of tips for improving your self-esteem and strengthening self-compassion. And finally, you'll discover effective communication strategies you can use to explain to others how you are different-and why it's perfectly okay to be different! When you're caught in a storm of stimuli, it's easy to become socially anxious and introverted. This book will give you just the boost you need to stand up for yourself and make your voice heard-especially at school, or any situation where you face a daily gauntlet of unavoidable challenges. Being highly sensitive in an increasingly insensitive world can feel like a losing battle. You need every tool at your disposal to successfully negotiate and navigate the endless array of sights, sounds, smells, and emotions that most people take in stride. Let this book be your guide as you learn the skills and gather the tools you'll need on your journey to self-discovery, self-advocacy, and a quieter, more fulfilling life

""A highly sensitive person is an individual who feels, thinks, and reacts more strongly compared to their peers, and for highly sensitive teens, navigating life and particularly high school can be especially overwhelming. Licensed therapist Noring structures this volume to help readers understand the outward and inward signs of being highly sensitive, the neurons and chemical state of the brain that affect sensitivity, the many different presentations of sensory-processing sensitivity, and how this sensitivity can impact relationships. Practical tips on how to discuss this type of sensitivity with teachers, friends, and family is nicely complemented by advice on strategies to improve emotional and mental health, often with the help of cognitive behavioral therapy. The book includes a quiz, a list of affirmations, and information about organizations that can help readers acknowledge and manage their heightened sensitivity, as well as a helpful section differentiating between heightened sensitivity and diagnosable disorders, such as ADHD and ASD. First-person accounts from teens about their own experiences with sensory-processing sensitivity help make the advice relatable. --Booklist -- ""Booklist"" (2/1/2025 12:00:00 AM) ""I highly endorse The Highly Sensitive Teen as a valuable resource for teens and their families.
