At Liverpool he was, from 1951 to 1977, Rathbone Professor of Ancient History and Classical Archaeology. He has also held Visiting Professorships at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of California at Berkeley, and has been a member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton.
