Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled The health related quality of life (HRQOL) of Chinese patients following total joint replacement surgery Submitted by Zou Haiou for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in January 2004 Introduction: Arthritis affects patients' daily life, leading to social isolation, curtailment of leisure and employment activities and consequently a reduction in health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Total joint replacements surgery were widely used to relieve pain and improve function. It was clear through literature review that the majority of research on this area has been done by surgeons among western population. The foci their studies were often limited to implant survival rates, revisions and mortality, with minimal attention to the holistic health of patients. A comprehensive study focusing on the HRQOL among Chinese population is much needed. Objectives: (1) To investigate patients' perceived joint-specific health (pain, stiffness and function) and overall HRQOL preoperatively and 3 months postoperatively; (2) To compare patients' joint-specific health and overall HRQOL between Hong Kong and Beijing patients; and (3) To identify patient-related factors which were predictive of HRQOL improvement. Methodology: A prospective, descriptive survey was conducted at one Hong Kong hospital and one Beijing hospital. Questionnaire concerning participant's joint symptoms, overall HRQOL and social support was administered to 72 Hong Kong patients and 72 Beijing patients from September 2002 to December 2003. Participants were assessed preoperatively and 3 months postoperatively. Results: The results showed significant improvement in pain (pDiscussions: The present study was the first study to evaluate the HRQOL during the short-term follow-up among Chinese joint replacement patients.
