OverviewJanuary 1945, World War 2, Eastern front, the Russian army has advanced nearly to western border of Poland. They are showing no mercy to the retreating German army or the inhabitants many of whom are culturally and linguistically German who must escape or die. An account of a couple's escape from south western Poland through Czechoslovakia to the safety of American occupied Bavaria in Germany. At the time the woman was 66 years old and the man 68. They left in freezing cold conditions covering the first 195 miles on an open hunting wagon drawn by two horses. For the remaining 475 miles they used trains, trucks and buses. The journey took around 9 months. Along the journey they were strafed by Russian aircraft, suffered accidents, depredation, deprivation and witnessed the terrible destruction of war and the horrors of the holocaust.
