The Gutter Brothers: ...a man and his dog in search of home

Overview

The Gutter Brothers Carlo is a man on the run. From his past, from his family's expectations, and from a society that constantly tries to confine him. But he gradually realizes that he is running only from himself. His companion on this journey is a quiet listener and his only true friend: the loyal Labrador Tasko. Together, they embark on a modern walkabout, a pilgrimage that pushes them both to their limits. It is a long journey that spans the teachings of Australia's Indigenous peoples and the dark forests of home. In his daydreams, Carlo often sees his old friend Bunjima, a warrior and guardian of the Dreamtime, who taught him to perceive and interpret invisible connections. The Elder serves as a bridge between Indigenous knowledge and Carlo's journey through the shadowed world of his own demons: the accusatory voices of his family, the detours of countless fleeting temptations, and his deep aversion to imposed dogmas. It is the various encounters along the path that teach him to see things in a different light. He meets genuine, as well as self-proclaimed shamans, each interpreting the meaning of the world according to their own rules. But he also meets a priest who shows him that faith can be more than an institution. He crosses paths with both the rich and the poor, each of them illustrating the many ways personal fulfillment can be attained. Reflections on a life of fractures and unfulfilled desires intertwine with the present. Carlo entrusts Tasko with fears and thoughts he would never burden anyone else with. And while his self-imposed solitude forces him to confront what haunts him, his faithful friend points out missteps along the way. Tasko shows him that it is possible to find peace without losing everything, and ultimately reveals where their true home lies. Gutter Brothers is a story of loyalty, loss, and the search for self-worth. It leads through experienced highs and imposed lows, showing that the only path to inner freedom lies in confronting one's own shadows, our eternal, inescapable demons. About the Author Rolf Göbel spent nearly two decades in Australia and Asia, experiencing firsthand the lives and spirituality of Indigenous cultures. Today he lives a more secluded life, dedicating himself to writing novels and stories that uniquely weave together nature, the supernatural, and the depths of human experience. He is the author of several books and the founder of Amberbaum Verlag, where he offers further insights into his creative work.
