Overview"There is grit and joy in life. You can eat a peach, taste the soft silky sweetness of the fruit, and still catch a flake of pit in your mouth. I'll take the unwelcome to get at the heart. Come and visit the orchard with me; We'll shake the trees and give out bushels of joy. This collection, while steeped in the Southern tradition, is also about soulful transcendence. --Tembi Locke, actor, advocate, and author of From Scratch In The Grit and Joy of Being, readers will discover Anne Poarch's jewel-like word paintings fizzing with color and light. Tinges of sadness and the bittersweet balance out these exquisite miniature portraits. While her work displays echoes of poets Mary Oliver and Elizabeth Bishop, Anne possesses a distinctly Southern sense of place, a sensual joie de vivre, and a wry sense of humor that is definitively her own. --Heath Hardage Lee, historian, curator, and author of The League of Wives and Winnie Davis: Daughter of the Lost Cause I have been reading a lot of Walt Whitman lately, and I really felt the new poems reflected that same sense of transcendence and sensuality that you find in his work. I especially like the poem titled Of Being. It was straight out of Song of Myself. --Tony Farrell, columnist and Richmond Times-Dispatch Arts and Culture writer Author Information"Anne Poarch grew up the youngest of five children in the Sandhills of North Carolina. Always mindful of her roots, Anne's early childhood experiences with nature and family helped inform her path to poet and entrepreneur. After graduating cum laude from Wake Forest University in 1991, Anne traveled to Paris, where she worked as an au pair for the Picasso family and attended the University of Paris, Sorbonne. After her year-long sojourn abroad, she returned to live and work in Richmond, Virginia, where she lives today with her husband and two sons. Anne gathers inspiration for her poems from touchpoints in nature that represent the ephemeral connections of life and beauty. The same calling from which the poet emerged inspired the creator in Anne to leave a twenty-two-year career in the financial services industry to seek a deeper connection to the beauty, spirit, and joy in natural life. Anne is the founder of Basket & Bike, a bicycle tour company that promotes leisurely excursions in nature. Through her business and her poetry, Anne empowers people to connect with the land and their communities in graceful, new ways. Basket & Bike gives back a portion of every tour to conservation causes in the Richmond area. ""The Grit & Joy of Being"" is her second book of poetry. Her first book, ""Flight: of butterflies and robins and other winged dreams,"" was published in 2017." Tab Content 6Author Website:Countries AvailableAll regions |
