Overview

Learn how to integrate green strategies into your building design. This practical handbook provides an essential introduction to green design strategies -- helping you to understand how to save energy, water and material resources. It provides the information required to make judgments about which strategy to use and includes tools to enable you to incorporate the chosen strategy during the early stages of design. Each of the forty-two selected environmental strategies includes a description of principle and concept, step-by-step procedures for integrating the strategy, annotated design tables and charts, key issues to be aware of when implementing the strategy, and references to further resources. Over 500 sketches and colour photos illustrate concepts and applications. In this second edition, ten new case studies are included to show successful implementation of green strategies and assessments of building performance. Site analysis and glazing strategies have been added and new tables and updated drawings simplify the application of concepts, preliminary system sizing, and integration of strategies. Using real building projects as a guide, designers will be able to make informed choices about the most competitive and effective way to design a green building. The Green Studio Handbook is a reference guide and source of inspiration for students in design studios and architects in professional practice.

An excellent resource for both educators and practitioners -Karol Kaiser, Director of Education US Green Building Council An extremely valuable tool for making decisions early in a project, ones that will help dictate the form of a building, help determine what systems will need to be in place and which consultants will need to be brought on board, and help set a budget or see what can fit within a predetermined budget. The book is aimed at students as well as professionals, and it is certainly appropriate for both, be it at the introductory level and as a solid reference for seasoned green designers. -John Hill, A Weekly Dose of Architecture [O]ffers a useful introduction to green design...the content stays fairly schematic to help guide and introduce green strategies...purposely avoids creating a green building checklist and getting bogged down in technical details...cover[s] a wide variety of topics and show[s] how they are interrelated systems. Each strategy is accompanied by a wonderful set of sketches and images that aid in the reader's understanding of the basic concepts. -Archdaily With more and more clients and architecture schools demanding 'green' design, both student and professional architects need to get up to speed quickly with the vast range of techniques in this fast-moving area.
