This is not a history book. It is not a travel memoir. It is definitely not the kind of thing the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority would put in their annual report, though frankly their annual report could use the help. This is an argument - one long, sprawling, occasionally drunk argument - about why Mumbai is not just India's biggest city but its most honest mirror. Everything India is trying to be, Mumbai already is. Everything India is terrified of becoming, Mumbai already survived. The city is messy, contradictory, broke, brilliant, corrupt, generous, exhausting, and completely, stubbornly alive - which is to say, it is the most Indian thing India ever produced. The book makes its case the way Mumbai makes its case: loudly, in your face, without apology, occasionally while someone is trying to sell you something through the window of a moving train.
