OverviewIn 1945, a group digging the Egyptian desert for fertilizer made a discovery that completely changed our understanding of early Christianity. These were various early Christian texts, including the Gospels of Thomas, Philip, and Marcion, some of the many alternative books about Jesus that were not included in the Christian Bible. Because they portray a Jesus Christ radically different from the one present in the New Testament gospels - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, these accounts were eventually excluded by the Church from its sacred text when an official version of Christianity was reached. The Gospel of Philip is one of the apocryphal books in the Nag Hammadi library; like the Gospel of Thomas, it is a gospel of sayings, that is, a collection of wise sayings attributed to Jesus. The attribution of the text to Philip is conjuncturally modern; its only relation to the apostle St. Philip is due to the fact that he is the only apostle mentioned in the manuscripts (73, 8). In fact, the text must have been written somewhere between the years 180 and 350 of our era, thus long after the death of Christ's disciple. The text was an important document for the Gnostic communities. It was discovered in the Egyptian desert in 1945, among a set of several Gnostic documents, known as the Nag Hammadi library (from the name of the archaeological site where they were discovered).
