OverviewA Frenchman named George has just arrived in Edinburgh when he meets Bethany, a Scottish girl who is crying on a park bench. The two start up a conversation. She is an art student and he is applying for a research grant in which he hopes to make an instrument that can communicate with God. Through a machine of his own invention, George manages to talk to angels and well-known saints who instruct him on how to approach God through love, humility and reverence for the natural world. George is told there is a struggle between good and evil, and that there are celestial battles of angels that influence events on Earth. Ultimately the fight is for each man and his place in the course of human history. George chooses to take the side of God. Other more unscrupulous characters have ambitions of domination. They would like to use George's machine to allow God to leave mankind to his own designs and destiny. George must also resolve a more personal dilemma. He must see whether his love for Bethany can help her out of her deepening problems, or whether he must rely on God's intercession to save her. For Bethany and George there is a mystery to unravel which is God. They must piece together the clues that are revealed to them, in a race against time, so as to save and be saved, with also the fate of nations in the balance.
