Table of ContentsReviewsArtfully connecting the modern classroom to ancient wisdom, The Golden Waffle Principle celebrates the timeless pursuit of knowledge while exploring the premise that education is far more than the mere dissemination of it. Get ready to rediscover the true magic of teaching. -Gary Abud, Jr. 2014 Michigan Teacher of the Year Author of Science With Scarlett Detroit, Michigan Steve Perkins' book of musings, reflections, and wisdom restores the humanity to our classroom practice and provides a necessary counterweight to the attitude that students are clients and parents are customers. Perkins sees education as Plutarch did, not as the filling of a bottle but as the kindling of a fire. His essays, like his stellar career in the classroom, are characterized by humility and generosity. You won't come away from the book with a ready-made lesson plan, but you will take away something even greater by reading it-joy. -Ed Coleman Milken Educator and National Board Certified Teacher Maggie L. Walker Governor's School, Richmond, Virginia Through the lyrical and intelligent tone that is classic Steve Perkins, this book paints his personal and practical experiences from the classroom with an introspective, almost reverent hand. Here, a reader will find real people doing the real and remarkable work that good educators do daily. The takeaways are all rooted in truth-that if such goodness is happening in the classrooms we visit in this book, then such must be true elsewhere too, which means there is a reason for hope. An unforgettable read! -Kathy Nimmer 2015 Indiana Teacher of the Year Director of SEEDS Tippecanoe School Corporation, Lafayette, Indiana In The Golden Waffle Principle: Finding Meaning in Teaching, Steve Perkins draws from classroom experiences, classical literature, and ""salt of the earth"" wisdom to masterfully weave together didactic tales that are sure to inspire and encourage. He will draw you in as you discover the profound impact that being a teacher with a love of teaching, learning, students, and of course all things Latin can have. Perkins ultimately blurs the lines between storyteller and philosopher, redefining educational excellence in the process. This book is an ode to education. -David McGinness, EdD Director of Student Teaching, Assistant Professor of Education Taylor University, Upland, Indiana As a teacher and leader in Australian schools for nearly 40 years, making ""connections in all directions"" has framed my instinctive drive to lead with trust, conviction, love, laughter, and high expectations.
