The Global Economic Crisis in Latin America: Impacts and Responses

Overview

Following the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008, the global economic crisis spread to Latin America through two primary channels: a sharp decline in US and European demand for the region's exports and reductions in remittances to the region. However, despite the prolonged economic slump in the developed world, Latin America has recently experienced a resurgence of economic growth. This new edited volume explores the effect of the crisis on the economy, and the response from governments in the region. The volume opens with a comprehensive editorial introduction, which lays out the rationale guiding the reader through the volume. The collection is then structured in three sections: crisis, impact, and response. The country experiences of Argentina, Brazil and Mexico are examined in detail in dedicated chapters, written by leading policy economists in these countries. This edited volume departs from other work on Latin America in both its comprehensive analysis of the crisis -- its dimensions, impacts and responses -- and in its multidisciplinary approach. The volume engages in both quantitative and qualitative assessments of the crisis in the region, employing methodology from economics, sociology, and political science to more accurately understand how the region fared during the global crisis.
