OverviewKing Oranyan was born to controversy as his own father said. As a child, he was bullied because of how big he was and because of the colour of his skin. (He may have had vitiligo or suffered from a similar sort of condition.) So he learnt how to use a great staff to defend himself and grew to become the mighty warrior who founded the Oyo Empire in the 13th century. But there's a much more mysterious reason behind why he decided to expand his kingdom and why he left his staff where it stands til this day. This story recaps the life of one of West Africa's most famous kings, highlighting some of the chief moments that ensured his name would be remembered throughout the generations. Even 700 years later, thousands of people still visit Nigeria to gaze upon the legendary Staff of Oranyan. With the text presented in both English and Yoruba, this book is sure to inspire young African men (and those of African descent) to learn more about their own heritage, language and culture. I publish books in languages I don't speak so children can read books in languages they do speak. Legends have always fascinated me. Do they give your children a sense of wonder too? As an Australian poet, it's hard to find work in the Outback. But there are children all over the world struggling to learn how to read. Some of them have hardly any books in their native language. That's why I created the Bilingual Legends series - to give as many children as possible the opportunity to read a story in their own native language. Usually, each book in the series is published in the language spoken in the land where that story originates. A typical book also includes the text in English, but in some cases Spanish, Portuguese, German, or another language is used instead. I hope you enjoy reading my books! Hello! I'm Sastra Noor, an illustrator with a passion for vibrant and captivating visuals. Art has been my lifelong companion, and I am thrilled to share my creative journey with you. My goal is to evoke emotions, spark curiosity, and transport viewers to new and exciting narratives through my artwork. I am fueled by the belief that art has the power to inspire, connect, and transform. Adesokan Raymond, the talented translator behind the words that bring this book to life, is a linguistic craftsman with a passion for bridging cultural divides through the power of language. Born with an innate curiosity for different worldviews and an insatiable appetite for literature, Raymond has dedicated a part of his career to the art of translation, seamlessly transforming the author's original prose into a tapestry of words that resonates with readers across linguistic boundaries. Hailing from Oyo state, Nigeria, Raymond's journey into the world of translation was shaped by a deep appreciation for the nuances and subtleties of language. Being well grounded in the Yoruba language and culture due to his nativity and passion for upholding the rich cultural heritage of Nigeria, he together with Josephine Ofianya Omale, another well-seasoned Nigerian linguist, founded JORAY Naija Multi-lingual Concepts, a multi-dimensional translational service that specializes in translating any content to any of the three major languages in Nigeria and pidgin English included. Raymond's work is a testament to his commitment to preserving the essence of the author's voice while ensuring a fluid and engaging experience for the reader. His translations are not mere linguistic exercises but rather a delicate dance, where he masterfully navigates cultural intricacies, maintaining the integrity of the narrative while allowing it to seamlessly integrate into new linguistic landscapes. Over the years, Adesokan Raymond has lent his linguistic prowess to a diverse array of literary works in Nigeria, earning acclaim for his ability to capture the soul of each piece. His dedication to the craft extends beyond the technicalities of translation; it delves into the realms of empathy and cultural understanding, enriching the reading experience for audiences worldwide.
