Overview"""The Gentleman's Magazine"" founded by Edward Cave in 1731, has been viewed as one of the great neglected resources of the 18th century. Founded and edited by Cave, the magazine initially served to review other publications. In its first decade it carried numerous extracts, plundered from other newspapers and journals, alongside original work. Some of the major literary figures of the period contributed to it, most notably Samuel Johnson. Johnson's career was inextricably linked to ""The Gentleman's Magazine"". It was the magazine that gave him his first regular work as contributor and later as editor. As parliamentary editor in 1740 he published regular accounts of parliamentary proceedings in the guise of ""transactions of the Senate of Lilliput"" in order to sidestep the official ban on parliamentary reporting. Together with essays defending Cave against the jealousies of rival booksellers, Johnson also wrote biographical accounts of scientsist, explorers and soldiers, and, with Alexander Pope, judged regular literary competitions. This facsimile edition reproduces the 15 most influential years of the magazine and includes original indexes reworked to cover the 16 volumes."
