Overview

In recent years, political polarization between right and left has resurfaced as a serious problem in modern representative democracies. This book shows that ideological polarization has deeper roots than it is usually considered, in the very innate mental structure of human beings, genetically assimilated during the evolution of our species: social organization defended by right is similar to that of our ancestors in the African forests (hierarchical, competitive and territorial). On the other hand, ideal society of the left resembles that of the groups living in dry savannas (egalitarian, cooperative and nomadic). But democratic regimes can be protected from the risks of political polarization, if human nature is properly considered in the design of political-electoral systems.
