Overview

France has been placed on the highest level of alert following the attack on the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris. Security sources in Britain warn of terrorist spectaculars. Iraq and Syria threaten to create a new generation of black widow female suicide bombers, amid fears that lone wolf saboteurs may launch an offensive that defies intelligence predictions, strategic logic and the judgment of political pundits. The constitution, meanwhile declares that habeas corpus is inviolate except in cases where constitutional rule is being replaced by a state of emergency. The prediction that an undisciplined democracy may collapse by its own rules can also be found, of course, in the words of the same constitution.
