Overview

It is early1919. Families are recovering from the trauma of the First World War. In the small village of Melham, Emily Parish, just fifteen years old, is grieving for her father who will never return to resume his life as a gamekeeper on the Melham Estate, and fearful of her own future, one of service, that her mother insists she must follow, despite the wish of her late father, that she receives all the benefits of a good education Her mother, Annie Parish, employed in the kitchens at Melham Manor, is offered the post of cook at Farnwell Hall, the seat of the late Lord Stratton The Hall is being renovated, after being empty for some years, since the old Earl died and distant relations are moving in. The Stratton- Smiths, with Lady Louise Grayson, a widowed young sister in law, still virtually fresh from school. A new young teacher, Katherine Bell, has taken over the running of the Melham village school, having graduated at Cambridge. She is attracted to Emily and recognises the potential that Emily possesses. She is determined that Emily will take her scholarship to Brammerton High, an elite school for girls, where she, herself, hopes to eventually enroll as an English teacher. She seeks the assistance of the Stratton- Smiths and Lady Louise Grayson, to achieve her wishes.
