In the dark, I felt around for a wall to find a light switch. Meanwhile, the wind outside picked up, and the howling grew louder as heavy rain began pelting the windows. It felt as though we were in the midst of a tornado. Eventually, I located a light switch near a small island in the kitchen. The newer appliances indicated that the cabin belonged to someone with financial means. With the lights on, I could see the high-end furnishings: a couch, love seat, coffee table, and end tables. Recognizing luxurious items was second nature to me, given my affluent background, although I am not particularly shallow. My parents are focused on appearances and status, which contrasts with my values and those of my younger sister. We prioritize friendship, love, trust, loyalty, and bonds with others-qualities that cannot be replaced or bought but can be earned.
