As well as writing the City Kicks books series, she continues to work as a special education teacher. Carley worked in London in a special education school as the the literacy and guided reading co-ordinator and English teacher for 9 years, before moving back home to Australia. She now continues to teach special education with a specialty in autism in her home town of Brisbane. Throughout her time teaching Carley has gained insight into how to successfully adapt lessons and curriculum content to make it accessible to students with special needs, specifically students with autism. Nathan Battiste has a degree in Digital Media and has been able to use his knowledge and creative skills in digital art to create the illustrations for the books. Nathan takes great care when it comes to the entire creative process and finds it both challenging and satisfying when turning concepts and ideas into physical realities. Nathan continues to work as teaching assistant in special education schools in London. Nathan is able to fuse both his knowledge of the digital field and work as a teaching assistant to create diverse and thought out visuals for books. Nathan takes into consideration the specific needs of the young people when it comes to the design process. He considers how colours, light and even shapes can play a vital role when telling a story to a specific audience through illustrations. The illustrations are designed specifically to be light on the amount of content within each picture, ensuring the focus of the readers is directed appropriately, but also provides enough visual content to keep the readers engaged.
