Overview

When the Royal Navy finally introduced submarines at the turn of the Twentieth Century it was a revolution for the service and its new submariners, but few people know of the many years of struggle by numerous designers and inventors to make this happen. Even less known are the names James Ellis Howard and Charles Seymour Allan, who were hard at work making their dreams into a reality from the far side of the world, travelling thousands of miles in an attempt to persuade the Admiralty that their designs were worth building. But their names never made it into the history books, their designs only being mentioned in newspapers of the day before being forgotten about once again.
