Overview

As American Christians, we have a rich political inheritance and a strong desire to act. Yet our action is stunted by reactionary politics and a lack of understanding of the systems which govern us. It is time for a practical manual on American government written specifically for Christians. In The Forgotten Realm, Elizabeth Landis explains the often ignored structures of government that the average citizen interacts with every day. Starting with the city and working outward to the county, special districts, state, and nation, Landis inverts the way many Americans think about politics and their role as citizens. By looking at these structures and learning them well, American Christians will not only become more informed citizens but also more engaged citizens, able to bring the gospel of Christ into an often unreached space. By faithfully pursuing civics, American Christians can ensure that the ""forgotten realm"" does not stay forgotten for long.

Endorsements for The Forgotten RealmElizabeth Landis's The Forgotten Realm is a great primer on government in America, explaining not just the federal government but also state, county, and city government and special districts. Understanding how the governments that have jurisdiction over you are organized and function is critical to responsible citizenship, and this book provides a good basic education in what you need to know.Aaron Renn, Writer and social criticThe princely powers of American politics have for too long framed our system of governance to suit their own interests, focusing attention on the halls of power in Washington, D.C. They entice us to either join our voices to the amplified rage machine or withdraw in despair. Elizabeth Landis flips the machine on its head, inviting Christians to engage first, as our forefathers did, in community, in neighborliness, in local action, and in concern at the state level. Her step-by-step, bottom-up breakdown of the American system reveals that there are ample opportunities for Christians to engage responsibly and effectively in politics, not with rage but with mercy, bearing witness to our faith, and effecting the only kind of change that lasts, which is the change of the human heart.Tony Woodlief, Author of I, CitizenIn writing this book, Landis did the hard but imperative work of making clear what is utterly opaque for most of us. As American Christians, we desperately need this book on civic engagement.Benjamin R. Merkle, President of New Saint Andrews CollegeAs a former mayor of Frankfort, Indiana, I can wholeheartedly attest that The Forgotten Realm: Civics for American Christians is exactly what our country needs. The book eloquently outlines how we, as a community of faith, can understand and engage with municipal government-an essential aspect of our democratic process.Chris McBarnes, Indiana's youngest and Frankfort's only third-term elected mayorA good book is one you enjoy upon first reading. A great book is one you pick back up again. Elizabeth Landis has produced such a book for those who have a sneaking suspicion that God's truth has been forgotten in the civil realm. We abdicate out of ignorance, but no one can plead ignorance after reading Landis's book. Written by a born-again Christian with a strong, conservative voice, this is a well-researched handbook that will help you explore how to faithfully steward your responsibilities as an American citizen and will inspire you to participate out of a love of God and neighbor. What is required is ""an educated faith,"" says Landis. If you want to make a difference in your community, state, and country, Elizabeth Landis will show you how in The Forgotten Realm. Read this book once, and keep it accessible on a nearby shelf, because you'll be sure to pick it up again.Quinton Cools, Vice President at TeenPact Leadership SchoolsNow, more than ever, it is essential to stand up for our beliefs in the public sphere-but how can we do so effectively? This book provides a remarkably clear rationale paired with a practical ""nuts-and-bolts"" approach to fulfilling our duties as citizens.Ben Hodge, California constituent of We the People
