The Folks Are Here: Herb and Jen

Overview

In The Folks Are Here, excitement fills the air as Herb and Jen prepare for their family's long-awaited summer gathering at the Roaring River cottage. The story opens with the siblings joyfully tidying their rooms while the delicious aromas of Jamaican cooking-chicken, stewed beef, rice and peas, and callaloo-fill the house. Curious and playful, they sneak outside to peek at the soup cooking over an open fire, despite Miss Madge's warnings. When car horns announce the arrival of relatives and friends, Herb climbs a pear tree to catch a glimpse-only to be chased down by red ants! The children then climb an ackee tree, where they spot the cars bumping along the narrow driveway. Soon the yard bursts with laughter as uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends gather to dance, play, and feast. The day is filled with joyful chaos-music, dancing, hula hoops, hopscotch, and games-until a brief kitchen fire interrupts the fun. Father quickly extinguishes it, and the celebration continues with spirited Jamaican rhythms before everyone cools off at the nearby beach. As the sun sets, goodbyes are tearful but hopeful. Herb and Jen wave and smile, comforted by the promise that ""the folks"" will return next summer for another day of food, laughter, music, and love.

Author Information

I attended the Froebel College Institute of Education, Roehampton, London, which majors in teaching about the development of the whole child: socially, academically emotionally, physically and spiritually. My early career took me into teaching young children in schools, lecturing, consulting, implementing, and developing stories for a flagship child to child project in rural Jamaica which is integrated into the Jamaican Ministry of Education's curriculum.Although my career has morphed into becoming an International Public Health Consultant, my passion has always been to write children's stories. I am driven by my knowledge of the importance of play for children's development and the gains made by honoring childhood. This story encapsulates memories of my childhood with my brother Herbie, who passed in an accident, and Jen, the author of the story. Our childhood was a happy one filled with fun, laughter, happiness, and pure joy.I exude these emotions intentionally and value giving our children a chance and space to play, have fun and enjoy their childhood years.
