Overview

The First Orca tells the story of a young humpback whale, Borie, who transforms into the first orca whale. Borie lives with his pod in the ice floes around the Antarctic, but he doesn't like being a filter-feeding whale. His mermaid friend Crystal uses her magic to change Borie into a toothed killer whale. Borie can hardly wait to have a meal of delicious fish. With Crystal's help and his family and pod's encouragement, Borie migrates north to form a new pod of orca whales.

Joanna Richey was born in England and has lived among the forests and waters of the Pacific Northwest for many years. As a successful water resources engineer, she has extensive knowledge of nearshore marine and riverine systems. She wrote this book with help from her grandson Ian Richey, who loves orca whales and the Salish Sea.
