"--Leon Beall, author, reader, BA in English, MSA, 25-year teacher of Social Studies. The First Hundred Years by Carolyn B. Leonard provides a unique perspective on American History, The author uses the census as an outline to develop an entertaining and unusual approach to life in the United States. Whether the reader is simply studying history or wanting to learn about the life his or her ancestors lived, she presents the reader with well-researched facts about each decade. Leonard unites her passion for history with her talent as an excellent writer who uses the threads of the census to weave an entertaining tapestry of the American experience. History teachers will find this book a useful supplement to dry textbooks. History aficionados will find it a delightful read that is as hard to put down as a gripping, suspenseful novel. ----------- Dr. Sheldon Russell: THE FIRST HUNDRED YEARS by Carolyn B. Leonard covers the US presidents and Federal Census procedures from 1790-1890. While this book is a rich source of factual material, it is especially effective in providing the reader with a keen sense of the times, something which is so often missing in reference materials. If you are climbing the family tree or are simply a curious reader interested in your ancestors' daily lives and experiences, this is the book for you. Not only is it well researched, it is also an enjoyable and fast-paced read, filled with rare and fascinating details of our past. When you reach the top of that tree, you will not only know who your ancestors are but what they lived. -- Dr. Sheldon Russell, author of THE HOOK RUNYON MYSTERY SERIES and A FORGOTTEN EVIL. ---------- Gwen Hewitt, writer, former owner-operator at Hewitt Farms, At the mention of the word history, we tend to automatically think, boring. Not so with Leonard's book, The First Hundred Years. Her book is so interesting no one will put it down. She delivers. It does just that. Meticulous research and detailed creativity went into the writing of Leonard's book. Tidbits of past Presidents' lives make parts of this history read like a testy novel. Although her focus is on the 'every-ten-years' US Federal Census(es), she enlightens us with the priceless information that these census records provide, other than a mere count of the population. She has unraveled the goggledygook into practical translation, melding it with valuable genealogical information. The writing flows with rhythm and incorporates the evolution of our US currency, in a way that leaves the reader scrambling to be educated. In an era when a man's integrity was an important aspect of his identity, Leonard gives us a glimpse into what would be considered the ""pop culture"" of those times, strengths and frailties. -----------------------"
