This is Volume 20 of a series that presents the complete works of Elizabethan composer Francis Pilkington. This volume contains “The First Book of Songs or Airs of Four Parts, ” originally published in 1605. Pilkington (c. 1570 â€"" 1638) was an English composer, lutenist, and singer who served as a Lay Vicar at Chester Cathedral. His compositions are representative of the English madrigal school and lute song traditions. This collection offers valuable insight into the musical tastes and practices of the early 17th century, and is a significant resource for scholars and performers interested in Renaissance and early Baroque music.
