In the mystical city of Nevermore, Ayana Carroll-Broussard, a salon owner with dormant supernatural abilities, is drawn to enigmatic relic dealer Eli. Their connection awakens Ayana's powers as a Protector, allowing her to sense emotions and travel through spiritual planes. Ayana discovers Eli wears a charm that prevents him from entering her salon or home. This crescent pendant, made from the Bone Torch of Nakia, was given to him by his grandmother Bibi, who controls him as an Obayifo, an emotional vampire. With help from her aunt Titi and friend Skylar, Ayana learns that both Eli and his twin brother Ali were born Protectors, but Bibi twisted Eli's nature for her own purposes. When Ali confronts Eli in a supernatural battle, Eli removes his charm, freeing himself from Bibi's control but unleashing unpredictable powers.
