The Fifth Cubist – The Complete Writings of Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler (SET - THREE VOLUMES)

Overview

The Fifth Cubist: The Complete Writings of Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler delves into the profound impact Kahnweiler had on Cubism and modern art. Through a comprehensive collection of his writings, this book reveals Kahnweiler's unique insights and perspectives, and sheds light on his relationships with iconic artists like Picasso, Gris, Braque and Léger. Orde Levinson argues that Kahnweiler should be considered a Cubist in his own right. Enriched with rare images and unpublished historical data, this essential set of three volumes is a must-read for art historians, students, and enthusiasts eager to explore the transformative world of early twentieth-century art.

Author Information

Orde Levinson is an artist, poet, art historian and educator, but above all that he has a love of art with a willingness to share his expertise to the world. He began his research on Kahnweiler at Magdalen College, Oxford, and has also published on John Piper, John Muafangejo, Shakespeare and Cubism, while also exhibiting his own work. Samuel Beckett described his work Ndilapa Nkosi as a ‘moving feat’ and Myfanwy Piper described his catalogue raisonné on the prints of her husband John as ‘meticulous and inexhaustible in research. It is, however not only a work of scholarship but one of enthusiasm and love.’ Described by peer reviewers as a remarkable project, a prodigious achievement, essential and long-awaited, Orde Levinson was in the unique and ideal position to have done this work. The real contribution of the book is its impeccable gathering of the writings of one of the most important commentators and first-hand witnesses of the pioneering breakthroughs of twentieth-century art, especially Cubism. Orde is currently finishing The Rialto Dialogues, a work inspired by Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice.
