The Feminine Divine: The Neuroscience of Gender Equality in Sikhi

Overview

We are living through a moment of reckoning. Across the world, women are speaking truths that have been silenced for centuries. They are naming abuses that were supposed to stay hidden. They are demanding recognition, respect, equality not as favours to be granted but as rights that should never have been withheld. Within the Sikh community, this reckoning takes on particular urgency. We are heirs to a tradition that, five hundred years ago, declared the radical equality of women. Our Gurus confronted patriarchy when confronting it meant challenging not just social custom but religious orthodoxy. They elevated women, honoured women, created institutions designed to embody the truth that women are not less than men not spiritually, not intellectually, not in any way that matters. And yet. And yet. Look at our Gurdwaras, where committees remain dominated by men. Look at our families, where sons are still celebrated differently than daughters. Look at our communities, where domestic violence remains hidden, where victim-blaming flourishes, where the gap between what we preach and what we practise yawns wide enough to swallow generations of women whole. This book is my attempt to close that gap. Or at least to shine a light into it, so that we can no longer pretend it does not exist. I am writing it as a man. I know this is problematic. I know there are things about womanhood that I cannot, by definition, understand from the inside. I know that women's stories should be told by women, and that my voice takes up space that could be occupied by a woman's voice. I have wrestled with this. I have wondered whether I should step aside, whether this book should be written by someone else. And I have come to a conclusion that feels right, though I hold it humbly. Men need to do this work too. Men need to learn this history, confront this theology, wrestle with these questions. If gender equality is only pursued by women, it will never be achieved because men hold too much of the power, too many of the keys. The liberation of women requires the transformation of men. So I am writing this book as a man who is trying to be transformed. I am writing it as an act of solidarity, an act of witness, an act of love. I am writing it because the women in my life deserve to have their worth proclaimed by the men who know them. I am writing it because silence is complicity, and I refuse to be complicit any longer. I do not presume to speak for women. I speak to them, and about them, and with them but never for them. The women in this book speak for themselves, through their actions, their words, their choices. I am simply the one arranging their stories on the page. May I do them justice. May I honour the trust they have placed in me. May this book be worthy of the women it celebrates.
