The Author: Walter Shear is Professor Emeritus of English at Pittsburgh State University in Kansas. He received his Ph.D. in American Literature from the University of Wisconsin (Madison). A specialist in American literature, he has published in journals and anthologies on a variety of writers: Washington Irving, Edgar Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mark Twain, Saul Bellow, Flannery O'Connor, Bernard Malamud, and William Saroyan.
