COOKE, author and editor of many books on U.S. history, received a B.A.from the University of North Carolina and holds an M.A. and Ph.D. fro Columbia University. His honors and awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship and a National Endowment for Humanities fellowship. He has taught at Columbia, Carnegie-Mellon, and Columbia University, and is now professor of history at Lafayette College. His home is in Easton, Pennsylvania.
