Breastfeeding is recognized as the ideal way to feed a newborn, with proven benefits for the health of the child, the woman, the family and society. Despite being widely recommended, its maintenance is often conditioned by biological, emotional, social and institutional factors. The father's involvement is a key determinant of successful breastfeeding, influencing the decision to start, the exclusivity and duration of breastfeeding. This book takes an integrated look at the father's role in breastfeeding, contextualizing it historically and exploring the concepts of paternity, parenthood, attachment and the transition to parenthood. It also addresses international initiatives to promote, protect and support breastfeeding, as well as the Portuguese reality, highlighting the importance of the intervention of health professionals.
