Table of ContentsReviewsThis beginning biography is a good introduction into life in the Roman Empire at the beginning of the first century. Galen studied medicine from the best doctors of the time and traveled the known world to seek more education. He was a surgeon for the gladiators of Rome and treated the emperor Marcus Aurelius and his son. He dissected animals and learned much about how their systems operated. He wrote several works on medicine, some of which form the foundation for medical textbooks today. The artwork in this well-written biography is good with readable captions. Younger readers may be upset with the description of Galen's work with monkeys. Unfamiliar words are sometimes italicized and always explained in the text. There are chapter notes at the back of the book for some of the text references. I found the Internet sites to be age appropriate for all recommended grades. This is the first book of a new series that will help provide needed background knowledge on the ancients. Bibliography. Chronology. Glossary. Websites. Index.
